The League

The IPL Story

The Indian Premier League was born in 2008 and changed cricket forever. Brendon McCullum's 158 not out on the opening night set the tone, and Rajasthan Royals, the least fancied side in the field, lifted the first trophy under Shane Warne.

Since then the league has grown from eight teams to ten, moved from a single title sponsor to a multi-billion-dollar media rights deal, and produced generations of Indian stars who first made their names in franchise colours. Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians have dominated the honours board with five titles each, while the 2025 season finally saw Royal Challengers Bengaluru break their long wait.
