T20 cricket rewrites its record books quickly. Bats get better, boundaries get shorter and batters get braver every season. Yet a handful of IPL records have survived years of assault. Here are eight that still stand, and why each one is so hard to beat.

1. Highest individual score: Chris Gayle, 175 not out

Bengaluru, 2013. Gayle reached his hundred off 30 balls, the fastest in T20 history at the time, and kept going. He finished with 17 sixes and 13 fours from 66 balls against Pune Warriors. No one has passed 160 since.

2. Highest team total: Sunrisers Hyderabad, 287 for 3

In 2024, Hyderabad broke the record twice in a fortnight, first with 277 against Mumbai and then 287 against RCB in Bengaluru. Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen each made hundreds in a match that produced 549 runs in total.

3. Most runs in a season: Virat Kohli, 973

The 2016 season was Kohli at his peak: four centuries, seven fifties and 973 runs at an average above 80. Jos Buttler came closest with 863 in 2022. Nobody else has reached 850.

4. Most career runs: Virat Kohli

The only player to appear for one franchise in every season since 2008, Kohli passed 8,000 IPL runs and remains the league's all-time leading scorer, well clear of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma.

5. Most career wickets: Yuzvendra Chahal

The leg-spinner became the first bowler to 200 IPL wickets in 2024. In a format built for batters, taking 200 wickets at an economy under eight is remarkable consistency.

6. Best bowling figures: Alzarri Joseph, 6 for 12

On debut for Mumbai in 2019, the West Indian quick tore through Sunrisers Hyderabad with six wickets for 12 runs, beating Sohail Tanvir's 6 for 14 from the very first season.

7. Biggest opening statement: Brendon McCullum, 158 not out

The first match of the first season, Bengaluru, April 2008. McCullum's 158 from 73 balls announced what the IPL would be. It stayed the highest score in the league for five years until Gayle's 175.

8. Most titles as captain: MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, 5 each

Dhoni led Chennai to titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. Rohit matched him with Mumbai in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Between them they own ten of the eighteen trophies ever awarded.

Records are context for predictions, not guarantees. A 287 in Bengaluru tells you about the ground as much as the batters.
